There are many reasons why individuals or couples experiencing sexual problems may turn to psychosexual therapy. These might include:
- Arousal disorder
- Erectile dysfunction
- Difficulties with orgasm
- High or low sexual interest
- Loss of sexual desire
- Painful intercourse (vaginismus)
- Fear of sex and sexual relationships
- Sexual risk-taking
- Sexual addictions
- Unwanted fetishes
As a counsellor at the Terence Higgins Trust for Sexual Health and Wellness, I trained extensively in psychosexual, health-related sexual problems and relationship issues. I use that knowledge and experience with current up-to-date research to support my clients with long term or recent events that have caused sexual unhappiness.
I have experience of working with clients experiencing sexual risk-taking, unwanted addictions, and fetishes.
Have stopped taking sexual risks. Learnt more about myself than I thought and also learnt strategy for dealing with emotional, mental and psychological issues which would be helpful in the future –Unemployed, UK
I also work with members of the LGBT community with and without sexual health problems, offering the support and understanding they may need in a completely confidential and safe environment free from judgment or new to come out.
I explore sexual problems, acceptance, or cause that has arisen rather than just treating the symptoms.
I had vaginismus, I had been trying to overcome for 5 years. I had psychosexual therapy through the NHS three years ago and came to Vanessa last year because vaginismus was still there and I was still depressed, low in confidence & finding it hard to be positive. It was really holding me back. I have a partner, and we have been together for 6 years – he has been with me from the beginning, and we both wanted vaginismus to be overcome and my feelings. Within the the third session with Vanessa was remarkable. My fear of the pain and past sexual experiences, beliefs and guilt came to the surface. My body was reacting in the sessions like never before. 10 weeks into the therapy I can say I have not had pain, I have not been having low moods and my sex life is unbelieveable. NHS said its something I had to live with and manage. From my experience with Vanessa, I will say no you don’t have to live with it. Please don’t live with it, only you know how painful and scary it is when you are experiencing it, and letting your partner down every time used to just break my heart. Sex is natural and I have learnt this from Vanessa and she has changed my life and my now husband. Contact her, you don’t just have to see her in person. I had the first few sessions in person and the remaining by Skype from Newcastle – Janine A – 2020
I can help you overcome your sexual problems through the use of a range of therapies including counselling, Psychodynamic Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). I’ll work with you to create a specific programme of treatment and support tailored to your needs. Exercises may be given to you to do at home between sessions.
Psychosexual therapy is an effective form of treatment that requires a weekly commitment for the most successful outcome. If you’re willing to try other therapies such as Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) with guided visualisation and behavioural therapy, can heighten your awareness and allow you to make lasting changes at both the unconscious and subconscious levels of your mind.
My wife wanted to have open sexual relationships with strangers. I was very surprised and hurt and initially agreed to this to keep our marriage. But her needs increase instead of just once a month to weekly. Vanessa helped me come to terms with our relationship and with her support found the courage to accept my wife’s needs as this made her happy, but it was not something I could continue to live with. I am now in a loving relationship and the support I received from Vanessa was the best thing in my life as my ex is in a place she can fully express her sexual desires without resentment or guilty because of me.
